Subject:

Science

Grade:

9-12

ICLE Standards:

Science as Inquiry:  Develop the abilities of scientific inquiry.

Science:  Apply scientific concepts, skills, and processes to everyday situations.

Performance Task:

Each student will create a drawing of a home plan.  The homes must contain a living room, a kitchen, at least two bathrooms and at least two bedrooms.  The student must place wall outlets in their home using adequate spacing and list all appliances that will need to be plugged into each outlet.  Using power requirements for each appliance, students will calculate the amount of amperes needed for each outlet and construct a data table.  Using a 20-ampere limit, students will wire all outlets into circuits.

Knowledge / Skills:

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems.  115

Understand electric current (i.e., the flow of electric charge) and apply it to conductivity, amperage, resistance, and circuits in parallel and series.  S.29

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions.   M.1

Rubric:

4 POINTS:  Drawing is neat and contains minimum room requirements; a reasonable number of outlets are used and each wall contains at least one outlet; data table is complete and accurate; circuits are neat, colored, and within 20 ampere limit.

3 POINTS:  Drawing is neat; a reasonable number of outlets are used; data table is complete; circuits are colored and within 20 ampere limit.

2 POINTS:  Drawing, outlets, data table, and circuits are all present.

1   POINT:  Project is missing at least one major component (drawing, outlets, data table, or circuits).
