Gold Seal Lesson:
Wheel Of Color

Copernicus Education Gateway

Subject:

Science

Grade:

9-12

ICLE Standards:

Science:  Color, mixture, measurement analysis

Arithmetic:  Fraction, percentages

Art:   Color wheel

Reasoning:  Discover a rule or principle underlying relationship

Performance Task:

In Part I of the task, the students work in groups to create a color wheel and color spectrum by mixing different amounts of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors to form new colors.

In Part II, each student will individually calculate the percentage of color composition for each primary color.  Their final conclusion will be to determine how many food-coloring drops of each primary color they will need to arrive at an exact mixture.

In Part III, the students perform the repeat experiment, but only use the blue, red and yellow drops to find all colors.

Note (materials): 12-15 drinking cups, Artificial food coloring, perm cotton strips, cardboard, calculator.

Knowledge / Skills:

Make observations using senses and instruments. Inferences and interpretations are arrived at based on observations. Classify observable properties and organize observations in a meaningful and logical way.  S.5

Know and apply the principles of scientific inquiry.  (Implicit in this statement are the processes of prediction, estimation, developing hypotheses, drawing conclusions, evaluation, and following ethical principles and professional procedures.)  S.114

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems.  S.115

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions.   M.1

Use the technique of dimensional analysis to convert units of measure (e.g., convert km/hr to m/min).  Understand and use various techniques for estimating, making and converting measure; and using these to perform dimensional analysis.  M.33
