ICLE Standards:

Earth and Space Science: Understand weather systems that affect local weather conditions.

Performance Task:

For this task you are to assume the role of a TV weatherperson for Channel WETR, located in a city of your choice. You are to first create and hand draw a weather map of the United States including symbols depicting the weather systems in all areas of the country. Include information on air pressure, wind direction, wind speed, fronts, amount of rainfall, humidity and temperatures. Then do either of the following:

  1. Write out in detail a two-day weather forecast for the city you chose. Also make a long-range (three to five days) prediction of what the weather might be. It should be a written report of the forecast that you would give if you were actually making the video broadcast on television. OR
  2. Videotape a two-minute broadcast that closely simulates a real telecast.

Knowledge / Skills:

Understand how and why the rotation and revolution of the earth around the sun affects the length of night and day, the changing of seasons, and weather patterns.  (s1)

Describe or measure positions on the earth's surface using coordinate systems (lines of latitude - longitude), and fields of isolines, isobars, and iso-surfaces.  (s26)

Identify and comprehend factors that affect climate patterns such as latitude, elevation, large water bodies and ocean currents, mountain barriers, wind belts, and storm tracks.  (28)

Apply an understanding of the meaning of graphics, layout, white space, italics, parentheses, and other visual aids.  (ela68)
