Performance Task:

|
|
Students will be introduced to common kitchen ingredients and their ability
to do work, in this case to clean a penny.
Students will need: vinegar, salt, sugar, a copper penny, three small clear
cups, paper towels, recording paper and pencil, and a work station with their name marked on masking tape to
avoid confusion during the experiment.
First, students should identify vinegar, salt and sugar by taste and
appearance. Then, they should predict which ingredients might clean the penny. Next they plan, sequence, and
carry out the experiment; record the effects of each ingredient; and draw a conclusion about which ingredients
caused Lincoln's face to get clean.
