Performance Task:

 

 

Students will be introduced to common kitchen ingredients and their ability to do work, in this case to clean a penny.

Students will need: vinegar, salt, sugar, a copper penny, three small clear cups, paper towels, recording paper and pencil, and a work station with their name marked on masking tape to avoid confusion during the experiment.

First, students should identify vinegar, salt and sugar by taste and appearance. Then, they should predict which ingredients might clean the penny. Next they plan, sequence, and carry out the experiment; record the effects of each ingredient; and draw a conclusion about which ingredients caused Lincoln's face to get clean.

  • Student can identify the ingredients by taste test.
