Subject:

Mathematics

Grade:

9-12

ICLE Standards:

Mathematics as Problem Solving: Apply the process of mathematical modeling to real-world problem situations.

Algebra: Represent situations that involve variable quantities; solve equations.

Functions:  Represent and analyze relationships using equations.

Performance Task:

Knowledge / Skills:

Understand the use of variables in expressions such as 4x, x+2, and 2x-1, solve for the variable, and know how to represent expressions such as "twice the number" or "four more than the number" using variables. (m7)

Understand the properties and classification of quadrilaterals by orientation (e.g., parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, square, and trapezoid). (m27)

Rubric:

4 Points = The student is able to analyze the problem situation, model the problem algebraically, and find a correct solution to the problem. He/she can make an evaluation between two alternatives.

3 Points = The student needs coaching to analyze the problem situation and to model the problem algebraically. He/she can correctly solve the equation set up to find an answer to the problem. The student makes an attempt to evaluate alternatives to the problem situation, but has difficulty doing this in a clear and concise manner.

2 Points = The student demonstrates a lack of analytical problem-solving skills. He/she needs help in setting up the problem and in writing the equation used to solve the problem. The student makes an error in the solution of the equation. His/her responses to the proposed alternatives to the problem situation are vague and unclear.

1 Point = Even with assistance, the student is unable to solve the problem. He/she indicates a lack of analytical problem-solving skills. The student is unable to set up a proper equation and is unable to solve the equation the he/she does set up. The student makes no distinction between the two alternatives to the problem situation and, therefore, does not show whether he/she is able to justify responses.
