Gold Seal Lesson:
Understanding Sedimentation

Copernicus Education Gateway

Subject:

Science

Grade:

K-4

ICLE Standards:

Science as Inquiry - Develop abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry.

Earth and Space Science - Develop an understanding of properties of Earth materials.

Performance Task:

This task requires you to perform a scientific experiment and observe how various sized particles settle when they are suspended in water. You will need some sand, soil, gravel, pebbles, and a clear one-liter plastic soda bottle. Place an equal amount of the sand, soil, gravel, and pebbles (about 1/2 cup of each) in the plastic bottle. Fill the bottle with water to about 2 cm from the top. Shake the container vigorously so that the materials are very well mixed in the water. Place the bottle on a solid surface and observe how the four different types of particles settle. Make a chart and record the order in which the four types of particles settle. In your science journal, write a brief summary of your experiment and state any conclusions that you can make from your observation.

Note to the teacher: You may wish to relate this inquiry to the formation of layers on the ocean's floors.

Knowledge / Skills:

Know and apply the principles of scientific inquiry.  (s114)

Identify the factors affecting the deposition of particles (e.g., size, shape, density, and velocity) and analyze the sorting of sediments in a system.  (s89)

Use writing as a tool for learning in formats such as learning logs, laboratory reports, note-taking, and journals.  (ela40)

Rubric:

4 Points  =  The student properly sets up the experiment. His/her conclusions show an understanding of the sedimentation process.

3 Points  =  The student requires some coaching to set up the experiment. He/she appears to understand the sedimentation process, but has difficulty expressing himself/herself.

2 Points  =  The student requires much coaching to set up the experiment. He/she shows little understanding of the sedimentation process and is unable to make any conclusions from his/her observations.

1 Point  =  The student does not complete the task and shows no understanding of the sedimentation process.
