Performance Task:

 

 

Divide the class into groups of four.  Each group picks an endangered species that they want to "save".  The group has a "media" campaign to promote the saving of its animal.  The group needs to use technology appropriate for a poster (2' X 3'), an advertisement brochure and a one minute videotaped commercial on why its animal should be saved.  This campaign will be presented to the class and each student will have an individual vote on which animal will be saved.

 

 

Knowledge / Skills:

 

 

Understand ecology as the study of the interactions and relationships of organisms with their living and nonliving environments (i.e., the ecosystem, communities, and populations).  S.13

Know the survival requirements of animals and plants and the history and implications of population growth.  S.40

Understand and produce a variety of informative formats such as business letters, memos, reports, news articles, brochures, proposals and critiques.  ELA.40

Demonstrate knowledge of persuasive techniques used in visual advertisements.  ELA.66

 

 

Rubric:

 

 

90-100 Completed all media assignments with little help and a lot of creativity.  Used scientific reasons for the importance of saving the animal.  Participated in the voting process.

 

 

80 - 89 Had some difficulty with media assignments.  Communication process flawed by few misspellings / mistakes. Participated in voting process.

 

 

70 - 79  Little creativity but completed media assignments.  Many communication flaws. Participated in voting process.

 

 

60 - 69 Complete assignments but with numerous mistakes.  Participated in voting process.

 

 

59 - 0 Incomplete assignments: all three projects not turned in. Did not participate in voting process.
