ICLE Standards:

Science as Inquiry - Develop understanding about scientific inquiry.

Physical Science - Develop an understanding of properties of objects and materials.

Performance Task:

This scientific inquiry requires you to investigate the concepts of suspensions and solutions. You are to perform the experiment and observe your results.

Experiment: Label four plastic cups as follows: salt, cooking oil, pepper, sugar. Fill each cup one-half full of water.

Predict what will happen when each of the 4 ingredients is added to the appropriately labeled cup. Add 1 teaspoon of each ingredient to the properly labeled cup and stir. Observe and record what happens in each cup. Place a paper towel over an empty cup and pour a small portion of the "salt" cup through the towel. Repeat this step using the remaining cups.

Observe and record your observations. Make a conclusion based on your observations. In your science journal write a complete, but concise, report of your experiment. Include your prediction and conclusions, how they compare, and what you learned from the experiment.
