Life Science: Develop an understanding of the importance of plants in various aspects of our lives.

Performance Task:

Work with one other student on this task. School is out for the summer, and you and a friend decide to go on a wilderness camping trip. After hiking about 25 kilometers the first day, you find a remote area and set up camp for the night. The area is not a regulated camping area, and there is no sign of people around. At daybreak, you wake up to discover that some bears have eaten or destroyed all your belongings. From the map that you are carrying, it appears as if the nearest sign of life is about 35 kilometers north of your location. Armed with a pocket knife, a map, a pencil, and your knowledge of plant biology, you must accomplish the following objectives in order to survive.

  • Devise a directional device from materials available and describe the process you will use to determine direction using this device

  • Produce a quick reference chart of the edible parts of local plants and an identification guide of edible species in this area

  • Describe in writing a method of producing shelter using local plants

  • Plan a route to find the nearest community, estimating time and amount of food you will need

  • Describe and create a plant derived tool or device that you could make that would help you carry out your plan

Knowledge / Skills:

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems.  (s115)

Know the structure and functions of roots, stems, and leaves.  (s11)

Identify and comprehend celestial observations (i.e., motions of objects in the sky) such as star paths, planetary motions, satellite motions, and sun motions.  (s50)

Rubric:

4 Points  =  All components of the task are completed. Directional device is usable and constructed from proper materials. Chart of plants exhibits knowledge and understanding of roots, stems, leaves, and reproductive structures. Description of shelter and sample tool is functional and made of appropriate materials. All written work is free of grammatical and mechanical errors. The student demonstrates a thorough understanding of plant biology.

3 Points  =  All components of task are completed, but assistance is required from others. Directional device and sample tool are finished, but are not creative and/or are very simple. Written work is relatively free of grammatical and mechanical errors. The student demonstrates a fairly good understanding of plant biology.

2 Points  =  All components of task are attended to, but much help is required from others. Directional device and sample tool are carelessly constructed. Mechanical and grammatical errors distract from the written work. The student demonstrates only a minimal understanding of plant biology.

1 Point  =  All components of task are not complete. Directional device and sample tool are incomplete and nonfunctional. Written work is poorly done, containing many errors. The student demonstrates little, if any, understanding of plant biology.
