Performance Task:
|
|
|
In today's world, many surveys are conducted. There
are several companies who specialize in conducting surveys, analyzing data, and making inferences from the collected data.
Data collection and analysis are used to make decisions in the real world. For example, many economic,
political, and social decisions are made based on the results of surveys. For this task, you are asked to
decide upon some topic to investigate and design a study, including the following sub-tasks:
-
Develop three questions in multiple choice format to be used in your
survey that address the subject of your investigation. Your questions should provide for five responses.
Example: How many times have you moved in your life?
A. 4 or more B. 3
C. 2
D. 1
E. never
-
Using your questions, survey a total of forty people, including ten
adults. Obtain the signature of each person participating in your survey.
-
Construct a frequency table for each of your questions.
-
Compute the mean and the mode of the responses for each question.
-
Display your results, using a different graphing technique for each
question. Your techniques might include stem and leaf plots, box plots, histograms, circle graphs, and bar
or line graphs.
-
Summarize, including an analysis of your data, the results for each
question and determine any significance, if any, of your survey.

Rubric:

4 Points =
The student independently completes all parts of the task. He/she
has a well defined investigation and has developed three questions that
will adequately aid in this investigation. The student conducts the survey
with the required number of participants. He/she accurately computes the
mean and mode for each question and constructs neat displays of the data.
The student writes a concise and clear summary of the study and states
significant results of the survey.
3 Points = The student completes all parts of the task,
but needs assistance in doing so. He/she has a well defined investigation,
but the three questions are not well stated. One or two minor errors occur
in the computations. Although three displays of the data are constructed,
they are somewhat lacking in neatness and accuracy. The student writes a summary of the study, but
significant results of the survey are vaguely stated.
2 Points = The student does not complete all parts
of the task and needs significant assistance in completing those parts that
he/she does attempt. The investigation is adequately stated, but the
questions to obtain data are vague and poorly constructed. The required
number of participants, with signatures, were not obtained. Several errors
occur in the computations and the displays of data are poor. The student
summary of the study is vague and no meaningful significance of the results
is stated.
1 Point = The student does not complete the task. He/she indicates
little understanding of how to conduct an investigative study. Fewer than
twenty participants were used in the survey. The student did not compute
the necessary measures and did not completed displays for all of the data.
The student summary is omitted or meaningless, and he/she did not attempt to state any
significance of the survey
