ICLE Standards:

Compute and solve math problems.

Solve real-world problems.

Performance Task:

You have $3,000 to invest in the stock market. For two weeks you will study and analyze the stock market. You will decide what stocks to buy. Then you will "buy" at least 2 shares of at least 5 different stocks. Give reasons for your choices and record them in a well organized stock market journal. After two more weeks the stocks will be cashed in. A stock champion who makes the most will be named. A "crash" champion who loses the most will be named.

If time allows, this task can be extended over a more realistic period of time such as a full year. Students may buy and sell during that time frame, use technology to keep accurate records of their gains and losses, and keep a journal of their reasons for buying and selling the stocks they did.

Knowledge / Skills:

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions. M.1
