Performance Task:

December is a month of celebrations around the world. It is a time of love, cooperation, and togetherness. Many people celebrate by using lights. To bring these themes together, use a simple electricity unit.

Using a battery and small insulated pieces of wire (one for each member in the class) and a light bulb, the class makes a simple circuit. Everyone holds a piece of wire and comes together in a small circle connecting all the components. This project reinforces the concept of togetherness and cooperation to make things work, just as an electrical system depends on many pieces to work properly.

Discuss some simple principles of electricity. Give the students a paper plate, which they can color brown. Have them make some antlers, and give the plate eyes and a mouth.  Have students make a little hole for the nose (a tiny red bulb) and glue the bulb in place.   Give each student a large tongue depressor, which becomes a handle to hold the reindeer's face.  Attach a 9-volt battery to the tongue depressor with packaging tape.  Give each student two wires, and ask them to experiment with the wires to see if they can light the nose.  In a short time the room will be glowing!

Knowledge / Skills:

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems.  (s115)

Understand electric current (i.e., the flow of electric charge) and apply it to conductivity, amperage, resistance, and circuits in parallel and series.  (s29)

Participate, sometimes leading, in group meetings by contributing, taking turns speaking, and working toward a common goal.  (ela20)
