Subject:

Science

Grade:

K-4

ICLE Standards:

Science as Inquiry: Students learn to ask questions that will help them gain knowledge about the world. Students learn how to use books and other sources of information to gain knowledge. Students reconstruct previously learned knowledge to gain new insig

Physical Science: Students develop an understanding of position and motion of objects.

Performance Task:

Your task is to design and construct a mechanical device that consists of two or more simple machines. You are to follow the guidelines below in your design and construction:

  1. Use recycled and common materials plus any necessary fasteners. (Do not use manufactured toy building materials.)
  2. Your machine should have moving parts, but no power source like a battery or motor. Only human energy can be used.
  3. Your machine needs to do some kind of work.

Make a written explanation of your machine and explain how it works. Include any design drawings that you used. Give a name to your machine. Discuss the forces, work, motion, and simple machines that are involved in your device. Give a brief explanation of motion and why it is important in machines. Describe how things move and why they move in the ways they do.

Notes to the teacher:
The following resources could be made available to students for "research."

  • Third and fourth grade science textbooks
  • Library books on work and simple machines
  • Laser disk:  "Windows on Science," Optical Data Corp.

The following materials should, if possible, be made available for students to use:

  • variety of old and/or discarded materials to use in construction
  • fasteners - nails, screws, glue, paper fasteners, hammers, etc.

Knowledge / Skills:

Use expository writing skills in subjects other than English language arts.  (ela58)

Understand the concepts and uses of machines (e.g., levers and pulleys).  (s49)

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems.    (s115)
