Gold Seal Lesson:
Pulleys-Making Work Easy

Copernicus Education Gateway

Subject:

Science

Grade:

K-4

ICLE Standards:

Physical Science - Develop an understanding of position and motion of objects.

History of Science - Develop an understanding of science as a human endeavor.

Performance Task:

Throughout the years, people have always used machines to help them do their work. Simple machines were the earliest machines used by people. Most machines today are complex machines, made by combining two or more simple machines. The pulley is one of the original simple machines. Find out all you can about what a pulley is and how it helps us do work.

Note to teacher: The students should get this information from their texts, resources in the classroom or library, the encyclopedia, the dictionary, etc. In your science journal describe the pulley and how this simple machine makes work easier.

Explore the school and locate at least three pulleys. Record in your science journal the pulleys you see and explain how they are being used. Now, you are to form a group with two other students and construct a pulley and demonstrate it to the whole class. Draw a picture of your pulley in your science journal.

Knowledge / Skills:

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems.  (s115)

Understand the concepts and uses of machines.  (s49)

Use writing as a tool for learning in formats such as learning logs, laboratory reports, note-taking, and journals.  (ela40)

Rubric:

4 Points  =  The student understands what a pulley is and how it functions. He/she can identify at least three pulleys in the school. The student works as a contributing member of the group to construct and demonstrate a pulley. His/her journal entry is clear, legible, and complete.

3 Points  =  The student needs coaching to understand what a pulley is and how it functions. He/she can identify only two pulleys in the school. The student is cooperative in the group, but does not contribute very much to the construction/demonstration of a pulley. His/her journal entry is incomplete and/or contains some misconceptions.

2 Points  =  The student shows little understanding of what a pulley is or how it functions. He/she can identify only one example of a pulley in the school. The student's contribution to the group effort is minimal. The journal entry is not very legible. It is unclear and incomplete.

1 Point  =  The student shows no understanding of what a pulley is or how it functions. He/she is unable to identify any pulleys in the school. The student is uncooperative in the group and does not contribute any effort to the group activity. His/her journal is very incomplete and lacks any meaningful material.
