Pool Temperatures

Subject:

Mathematics

Grade:

5-8

ICLE Standards:

Statistics: Construct, read and interpret tables, charts and graphs.

Performance Task:

Sandy works at the Sunshine Pool as a lifeguard. One of her daily duties is to record the temperature at noon. The chart below shows the data Sandy collected from June 1 through June 15.

Date  Temperature    Date  Temperature
June 1 75   June 9 84
June 2 78   June 10 85
June 3 71   June 11 86
June 4 75   June 12 85
June 5 79   June 13 85
June 6 80   June 14 80
June 7  80   June 15 79
June 8  81

Construct a line graph displaying the temperatures from June 1 through June 15 at the Sunshine Pool. Using statistical terms, give a description of the temperatures for this 15-day period. In addition to this description, state at least three facts concerning the temperatures over the 15-day period. Give at least two other data topics about weather that could also be depicted using line graphs.

Note to the teacher: You could have the class collect temperatures at the school yard or at home for 15 consecutive days and use that data rather than the data from Sunshine Pool.

EXTENDED ACTIVITY: Students could, as a home assignment, find examples of line graphs in newspapers, books and magazines, and discuss the data depicted in these graphs.

Knowledge / Skills:

Understand the best procedures for statistical data collection, organization, and display.  (m5)

Understand the characteristics of measures of central tendency (i.e., mean, median, and mode).  (m15)

Rubric:

4 Points  =  The student independently completes the task. His/her graph is neat and well drawn. The student accurately describes the temperatures for the 15 day period using mean, median and mode. The student gives at least three facts concerning the temperatures over the 15 day period and gives two other data topics about weather that could be depicted using a line graph.

3 Points  =  The student needs assistance to complete the task. His/her graph is correctly drawn, but could be more neatly constructed. The student only used two statistical terms to describe the temperatures. He/she gives only two facts concerning the temperatures and identifies only one other data topic about weather that could be depicted using a line graph.

2 Points  =  The student is unable to complete all aspects of the task. His/her graphs are not well drawn and contain several inaccuracies. The student uses only one statistical term to describe the temperatures. With coaching, he/she can still only give one fact concerning the temperatures and can only identify one other data topic about weather that could be depicted using a line graph.

1 Point  =  The student does not complete the task. He/she is unable to draw an accurate graph. The student cannot use statistical measures to describe the data nor can he/she make any conclusions concerning the data. The student does not have an understanding of line graphs.
