Subject:

Mathematics

Grade:

9-12

ICLE Standards:

Algebra: Develop an understanding of variables, expressions, and equations. Represent situations that involve variable quantities with expressions, equations, and inequalities.

Mathematics as Problem Solving: Solve problems by investigating situations, formulating questions, making predictions, constructing solutions, and evaluating results.

Performance Task:

Mark works as an assistant at the city park. He has been given the job of purchasing rope for a new playground area in the park. He has received bids as outlined below from two companies, Top Hardware and West Side Hardware.

Top Hardware:

  • $55 for the first 50 feet of rope

  • $1.25 for each additional foot of rope

West Side Hardware:

  • $57.50 for the first 50 feet of rope

  • $1.20 for each additional foot of rope

Assuming that the rope at both hardware stores is of equal quality, write a function that could be used to find the cost of the rope that Mark needs to buy. Analyze this cost function and decide which company Mark should buy the rope from to get the better deal. Justify your answer. If Mark needs 1,000 feet of fencing, how much will he save by buying it from the company which gives him the better deal?

Note to teacher: You may wish to have students use a calculator with graphic capability in doing this task.

Knowledge / Skills:

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions.  (m1)

Understand the use of variables in expressions such as 4x, x+2, and 2x-1, solve for the variable, and know how to represent expressions such as

Rubric:

4 Points = The student independently fully accomplishes the task. He/she demonstrates complete understanding and use of the central mathematical ideas. The students' work is well organized, neat, and error free.

3 Points = The student needs some coaching to accomplish the task. He/she demonstrates essential understanding of the central mathematical ideas. The students' work is fairly well organized, relatively neat, and contains no major errors.

2 Points = The student only partially accomplishes the task. He/she demonstrates limited understanding of the central mathematical ideas. The students' work is not as neat as it should be, is not well organized, and contains at least one major conceptual error.

1 Point = The student is unable to complete the task. He/she accomplishes only a small portion of the task. The student demonstrates minimal understanding of the central mathematical ideas. His/her work is poorly organized, sloppily done, and contains several errors. He/she demonstrates a lack of both conceptual and procedural knowledge.
