Your neighborhood has decided to construct a
playground. To raise money, community members have decided to conduct a recycling campaign. Your family is among the many
families that will adopt a recycle and reuse program at home. In order to get the entire community involved,
your help is necessary to develop awareness banners and posters and to design a recycling and reusing
plan for your family. You will also have the opportunity to submit a draft design of the new
playground.
Phase 1: Developing awareness banners and posters
Develop a poster, banner or flier giving the families of your community
information about pollution, conservation, recycling and reusing. Be creative. Your poster should be
informative, accurate, eye catching and especially neat.
Note to the teacher: If available, a software program such as Publisher
would be a good way to have students introduce technology into the
task.
Phase 2: Designing a recycling and reusing plan for your family
It would be a good idea for your family to follow a specific plan in order
to be effective in their efforts in helping to raise money for the playground. What type of plan would you
suggest your family follow to begin to conserve, recycle and reuse? Develop a written family plan
containing at least five action steps that your family can implement. This plan should either be written neatly on
a piece of paper or, if you have a computer, you may wish to do it using a word processing program.
Phase 3: Designing the playground
Community members have decided that they should have a contest for the
design of the playground. The person submitting the winning design will have the playground named after
him/her. The playground needs to be appropriate and designed to be enjoyable for children of all
ages. The following shapes need to be included in your design: square, rectangle, circle, triangle, oval,
diamond and rhombus. You can include other shapes if you wish. Either construct your design using a computer
software program or construct it on drawing paper using rulers, protractors and compasses.
