ICLE Standards:

Science as Inquiry: Gather information to answer questions using media sources, direct observation, and surveys or interviews.

Statistics: Record and display gathered information.

Communication: Make written presentation describing the nature, process, an

Performance Task:

Note to the teacher: This task would be done after the students have studied the characteristics of Earth as a planet in the solar system. Using sources available to you, identify the other eight planets in our Solar System and investigate their characteristics. Compare and contrast the planets, describing similarities and differences with Earth and with each other. Use at least two of the following to gather your information:

  1. media source such as simple encyclopedias, magazine articles, nonfiction books;
  2. direct observation such as CD/ROM;
  3. interviews with an astronomer or meteorologist.

In your science journal, record and display your information. You may use, but are not limited to, such devices as graphs, diagrams, and maps. Write a detailed description of your inquiry, communicating your findings to the audience. Include how the planets are different and how they are similar.

Note to the teacher: You may wish to invite a guest speaker on the subject for the class to interview.

Knowledge / Skills:

Know and apply the principles of scientific inquiry.  (s114)

Gather information from a variety of sources, including electronic sources, and summarize, analyze, and evaluate its use for a report.  (ela3)

Identify and comprehend celestial observations (i.e., motions of objects in the sky) such as star paths, planetary motions, satellite motions, and sun motions.  (s50)

Use writing as a tool for learning in formats such as learning logs, laboratory reports, note-taking, and journals.  (ela40)

Rubric:

4 Points  =  The student independently completes task. Information was gathered by using at least two relevant sources. The information gathered is complete, reasonable and accurate and legible. The journal entry describes the similarities and differences and is written in a manner easily understood. The student indicates a high level of understanding as to how a scientific inquiry is carried out.

3 Points  =  The student needs some coaching to complete task. Although information was gathered using at least two relevant sources, that information is somewhat sketchy and contains minor inaccuracies. The display is not as legible, nor as neat as it should be. The journal entry describes the similarities and differences in the planets, but the writing is not smooth and, at times, it is difficult to know what the writer means. He/ she indicates an adequate level of understanding as to how a scientific inquiry is carried out.

2 Points  =  Even with assistance, the student has much difficulty in completing the task. Only one relevant source was used to gather the information. The information is very sketchy, not always reasonable and contains major inaccuracies. The gathered information is poorly displayed, and the journal entry is poorly presented. He/she does not indicate much understanding of the inquiry process.

1 Point  =  The student does not complete task. No good source is used to gather information. The information is meaningless. There is no attempt to display information, and journal entry is incomplete, illogical an contains mostly incorrect information. The student has little, if any, understanding of the inquiry process.
