Subject:

Science

Grade:

5-8

ICLE Standards:

Scientific Inquiry - Develop an understanding about scientific inquiry.

Physical Science - Develop an understanding of properties and changes of properties in matter.

Performance Task:

In this task you are to predict what physical and chemical changes occur when certain substances are mixed. You will then actually mix the substances, observe what happens, and compare the actual happening to your prediction.

Predict the changes, if any, that you think will occur when calcium chloride and baking soda are mixed. Next, predict the changes that will occur when water is added to this mixture. Write down your predictions. Using plastic spoons, mix one or two spoonfuls of calcium chloride and baking soda in a small plastic bag. Observe and record what happens. Next, carefully add a small amount of water into your mixture of calcium chloride and baking soda. Observe and record what happens. Draw conclusions based upon your observations.

Knowledge / Skills:

Know and apply the principles of scientific inquiry.  (xs1)
