Performance Task:

 

 

Chris O'Dowd is a painter who subcontracts with a construction firm to do interior painting. Chris must provide a cost estimate to the firm for each job. The chart below shows the dimensions for each room of a house for which Chris is preparing an estimate.

Chris makes the following assumptions in preparing the estimate:

  1. Approximately 20% of wall space is taken up by windows, door openings, closet doors, etc.

  2. A good quality paint requires only one coat and will cover about 400 square feet of wall.

  3. A good quality paint costs approximately $15.00 per gallon plus an 8% sales tax.

  4. About 1000 square feet of wall can be painted each day, including preparation and cleanup time.

If Chris charges $160.00 a day for labor, what estimate of total cost should be given to the construction firm for this job? Remember, this is an estimate; exact amounts should be rounded appropriately.

4 Points  =  Contains a complete response with the understanding of mathematical ideas and processes shown. Appropriate formulas are used. Computation is organized and accurate. Computations are rounded appropriately. All assumptions are applied in the analysis of the problem.

 

 

3 Points  =  Contains a good response, but some errors exist in the analysis of the problem. Work is fairly well organized, but some errors in computation exist. Rounding of numbers in the solution is inconsistent and sometimes not appropriate. Not all of the assumptions are applied in the solution of the problem.

 

 

2 Points  =  A complete response to the problem is given, but the work is not well organized. The analysis of the problem is unclear and several computational errors exist. The use of estimation is largely neglected. Some of the assumptions are ignored or not sufficiently applied in the solution to the problem.

 

 

1 Point  =  The response to the problem is incomplete. The work is poorly organized and little analysis of the problem is shown. Many computational errors exist and estimates are inappropriately or not made at all. Most of the assumptions are poorly applied in the solution to the problem.
