Subject:

Science

Grade:

5-8

ICLE Standards:

Physical Science: Develop an understanding of the size of the planets and their distances from each other.

Computation: Develop computational and estimation skills with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

Measurement: Develop an understanding of scale as used in mathematical modeling.

Mathematics/Science as Reasoning: Develop critical thinking abilities.

Communication: Develop abilities to communicate in writing and orally.

Mathematics/Science in the Workplace: Develop skills to work as a team member on a problem.

Performance Task:

Group Task:
Working in groups of 3-5 students, make an accurate three-dimensional model of our solar system showing the sun and the planets in their orbits. The model is to be made using a scale determined by your team. Before making the model, develop a chart of the planets, including their names, relative sizes in relation to Earth, distance from the sun, and distance between them and Earth. The report which accompanies your model should be written in clear, correct English and include the source(s) of your information, necessary computations, the scale used in making your model, and the chart you developed.

Individual Task:
Select a planet and research it thoroughly. Make a written or oral report that includes information such as the composition of the planet, when it was discovered, its size and distance from the sun and the other planets, the number of moons (if any) it has, its speed, the length of time required to make one revolution, the length of a planet year, its physical features, etc. Pictures and/or visuals should be a part of your written or oral presentation.

Knowledge / Skills:

Apply the geocentric and heliocentric solar system models to explain celestial and/or terrestrial objects or events. Learn the geometry of the earth's orbit around the sun and the gravitational force and energy effects on the earth relative to its position.

Gather information from a variety of sources, including electronic sources, and summarize, analyze, and evaluate its use for a report.  (ela3)

Present information in well-organized fashion that will be clear to the target audience.  (ela11)

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions. (Texas 8th - Compute with rational numbers in the solution of problems.)

Use the technique of dimensional analysis to convert units of measure (e.g., convert km/hr to m/min).  (Texas 5th - Use equivalent measures to convert units of measures within a measurement system.)
