Performance Task:

|
Note to the teacher: For this task you will need
several labels from food packages (usually found on the side panel) or will
need to have the students locate them themselves. Students should be
familiar with the food pyramid. For this task you will need three
"Nutrition Facts" labels from food packages. Either get these
from your teacher or bring them in from home. Your three labels should be
either all from one type of food in the food pyramid or each one from a
different type of food in the food pyramid. Your task is to use the
"Nutrition Facts" labels to complete the accompanying worksheet.
Not all labels will have the same information. Therefore, some of the
"cells" on your worksheet will not be filled. There is also room
on the worksheet for items on the labels that are not listed on the
worksheet. After completing the worksheet, you are to compare the contents
of the three foods that you chose. In your science journal, write a brief
general summary of what is contained in the "Nutrition Facts"
label on packages. Based on your knowledge of the nutritional value of
nutrients found in food, make a written comparison of the nutritional value
of the three foods that you chose. Justify why you feel one of the foods is
more or less healthy to eat than one of the others.
