Performance Task:
|
|
|
Several technological issues presently pose either
long- or short-term problems for society and/or the environment. Relief from the present burdens posed by these problems will
depend upon the combined efforts of governmental agencies, industry, and an informed citizenry.
For this task, assume that you work for the environmental agency in your
state. You are a member of the team being sent to a conference to speak to a group of journalists who are
preparing for a public awareness campaign on a pertinent environmental issue. The public awareness campaign
will be designed to draw attention to environmental issues and to get industry and the public
involved in taking steps to reduce or eliminate burdens presently posed on society and/or the environment.
Your team will select and research one environmental issue. You will
prepare both a written paper and an oral presentation, giving a thorough and accurate overview of the
problem(s) caused by this issue, including possible causes. You should compile a bibliography containing references
used to research your topic. This would be available to the journalists upon request. Your team will
recommend corrective steps which industry/society can take to help reduce, eliminate, or prevent burdens
presently posed on society or the environment by this issue. Your recommendation will be displayed on a
visual or video tape in order to improve clarity and impact.
Your oral presentation to the journalists should be approximately 20
minutes, including a few minutes at the end for questions.

4 Points =
The presentation provides a comprehensive overview of a major
technological issue and corrective steps are clearly research-based with
multiple reputable references. An overview of the technological issue from
multiple perspectives is provided. Recommended corrective steps to engage
society/industry reveal new possibilities that would positively reshape
presently existing problems. The written and oral presentation, including
the prepared visual, are clear and elegantly presented. The student
contributes to the teamwork by being fully engaged in the task at all
times.
3 Points = Some coaching was required to create a
presentation that provides a comprehensive overview of a major
technological issue and corrective steps. Overview and corrective steps
appear to be research-based, but the number of references is limited.
Recommended corrective steps to engage society/industry is logical, but
their probability to reduce/effect existing problems is questionable. The
written and oral presentations, including the prepared visual, are
relatively clear, but the presentation is not moving. The student
contributes to the team effort, but failed to participate in the tasks
necessary to complete the project.
2 Points = The presentation provides an overview
with narrow focus as the overall nature of the technological issue.
Recommended corrective steps to engage society/industry are vague and are
not likely to reduce/effect existing problems very much. The written and
oral presentation, including the prepared visual, are at times difficult to
follow. Recommended corrective steps to engage society/industry will have
only minimal effect on reducing/eliminating environmental burdens. The
organization is not well-structured and the content is minimal. Student
made little contribution to the group effort, proving help to the group
only in isolated incidences.
1 Point = The presentation reflects little examination of the
technological issue. Recommended corrective steps to engage
society/industry are ineffective or without logical rationale. The overview
has many inaccuracies and/or fails to provide adequate research of issue.
The oral and written presentation are poorly organized and the content as
presented is very unclear. The presentation is not convincing. It fails to
engage industry/society in steps to reduce/eliminate any burden. Corrective
steps would be unlikely to reduce environmental burdens. Student fails to
work cooperatively and contributes little to the group effort.
