Choose a holiday such as Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, or any special occasion and:

  • select a day that's special to you.

  • design a menu (as in a restaurant: appetizer, main dish, vegetable, side dishes, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage).

  • prepare recipes, (one card for each item, scaled to the amount of people at your dinner).

  • prepare a grocery list. (Indicate items that are already on hand such as salt, flour, milk).

  • shop for food (via sale ads in newspapers).

  • calculate the cost per person.

A cap can be set on the amount of money to spend and/or the number of people invited to the dinner.

In your mathematics notebook, tell why you chose the celebration and describe the meal you prepared showing your work on the above items.

Rubric:

4 POINTS:  The student independently accomplishes the task.  The student accurately adapts the recipes for the number of people to be fed, compiles the shopping list, determines the cost of the dinner, and calculates the cost per person.  The student prepares a neat and accurate menu to show the selected dinner.  He/she communicates clearly and thoroughly in the journal entry.

3 POINTS:  The student accomplishes the task, but needs some assistance.  The student adapts recipes, etc. with minor errors.  The student prepares a neat menu to show the selected dinner. He/she communicates in the journal entry.

2 POINTS:  The student needs much assistance to complete the task. The student partially adapts  with several errors. The student prepares a menu that lacks neatness and accuracy. The student shows little attempt to communicate in the journal entry.

1  POINT:  The student needs much assistance to complete the task and completes only a small segment of the task.  The student inefficiently adapts with major errors and little effort. The student task is insufficient. The student does not communicate in the journal entry
