Performance Task:
|
|
|
Teams of students are assigned to conduct field
studies in several local creeks and stream bed locations to observe, record and analyze data regarding pollution of the stream beds
from a variety of sources. Students are to use this data to evaluate and report the effects of the pollutants
on the life-forms in the creek areas, and to prepare a policy position paper on cleaning up the stream bed areas
to the city council.

|
Knowledge / Skills:
|
|
|
Make observations of the local environment
using senses and instruments. Inferences and interpretations are arrived at
based on observations. Classify observable properties and organize
observations in a meaningful and logical way. (s5)
Identify and comprehend the concepts involving
the earth's water, i.e., ground water (infiltration, permeability,
porosity, and capillarity), surface water (runoff), and pollution (sources,
types, concentration, and long range effects). (s17)
Exhibit good data management skills by
collecting, organizing, and graphing data.
(s19)
Understand and produce a variety of informative
formats such as business letters, memos, reports, news articles, brochures,
proposals and critiques. (ela22)

4 Points =
Students participate actively in their assigned investigation teams.
They carefully observe the habitat and are able to identify pollutants and
their effect on a variety of life-forms in the stream bed habitat. They are
able to consistently and accurately record information, analyze and
evaluate the information, and are able to prepare and present a high
quality policy position paper to the city council.
3 Points = Student participate fairly actively but
inconsistently in their assigned investigation teams. Their observations of
the habitat are inconsistent, and they are not able to fully identify the
effects of pollutants on the stream bed life-forms. Their recording of data is
somewhat inaccurate and inconsistent, and their analysis and evaluation of the information lacks
accuracy and shows an incomplete understanding of the data. They are able to prepare and present
only a general position paper that lacks specific recommendations.
2 Points = Students participate inconsistently and
inactively in their assigned investigation teams, and tend to let one or
two students carry the majority of the work load. Their observations are
inaccurate and incomplete and their analysis and evaluation of the data is superficial at
best. They are unable to prepare and present a position paper to the city council, but do submit a
report to the teacher.
1 Point = Students do not participate on an assigned investigation team
and are unable to complete the assigned tasks.
