ICLE Standards:

Statistics:
Construct, read and interpret tables, charts, and graphs.
Make inferences and convincing arguments that are based on data analysis.

Mathematics as Communication:
Model situations using oral, written, concrete, pictorial, graphical and algebraic methods.

Performance Task:

Mark works as a market analyst. A market analyst collects and analyzes data to identify factors affecting business. This enables retailers, wholesalers, and manufacturers to make informed decisions. On one assignment Mark was asked to record the number of shoppers entering a particular store in a mall which is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. The chart below shows the data he collected.

  1. Display the number of shoppers for each hour in a stem-and-leaf plot.

  2. Using the intervals 50-59, 60-69, etc., make an histogram showing the data in your stem-and-leaf plot.

  3. Make a box-and-whiskers plot of the data.

  4. State two inferences that you can make from the pictorial representations of the data.

Rubric:

4 Points  =  The student makes a complete and meaningful response to all parts of the task. He/she shows an understanding of the ways in which data can be represented and is able to compute the necessary measures to effectively and accurately display the data. The student is able to analyze his/her work and make two reasonable inferences based on the data and his/her work.

3 Points  =  The student shows some lack of understanding of major ideas but is able to make a meaningful response to most parts of the task. The student is able to make only one reasonable inference based on the data and his/her work.

2 Points  =  The student shows little understanding of major ideas and is unable to make a meaningful response to most parts of the task. Work is sketchy and incomplete. Pictorial representations are poorly constructed. The student is unable to make a reasonable inference based on the data and his/her work.

1 Point  =  The student shows no understanding of the major ideas and is unable to make any meaningful response to any part of the task. Work is very disorganized and inaccurate. Pictorial representations are incomplete and/or incorrect. The student is unable to make any reasonable inference based on the data and his/her work.
