ICLE Standards:

Science in Personal and Social Perspectives - Develop an understanding of environmental quality.

Performance Task:

Students will investigate solid waste management and its impact on their community/region and make recommendations for the future. Working in small groups, students will select an area of solid waste management, e.g., sanitary landfills, recycling practices, mass burn plants, reuse of products, reduction of waste.

Each group will research positive and negative aspects of the topic and its impact on the region. A written report and class presentation will be required. Each group must also develop a model of its recommendations for the future in the form of drawings, a physical model, or a detailed implementation plan, for example.

Knowledge / Skills:

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems.  (s115)

Understand how humans, through technology, cause environmental change by disrupting the equilibrium or balance of nature by introducing pollutants into the environment.  (s6)

Gather information from a variety of sources, including electronic sources, and summarize, analyze, and evaluate its use for a report.  (ela3)

Understand and use graphs, charts, and visuals to enhance informational writing.  (ela29)Understand the nature and purpose of a variety of technical formats such as business letters, memos, instructions, policy statements, technical proposals, user manual

Rubric:

  1. Student's scientific research is complete and exposes information that is new to the student

  2. The problem identified demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the science concepts and societal impacts.

  3. The proposal for the future is plausible and creative.

  4. The written report is complete, mechanically correct, well organized, and conveys the important information appropriately.

  5. The model is an effective representation of the proposal for the future and is well executed.
