Performance Task:
|
|
|
You have contracted with a builder to construct a new house for your family. The contractor would like to know what type of flooring you want in each area of your new home. These are the main floor rooms for which you plan to provide flooring: kitchen, bath, family room, foyer, dining area, great room, and porch. Develop a floor plan to scale giving the dimensions of each room.
You have 4 types of flooring from which to choose. The cost of each is given in the chart below.

Working with two other students, your task is to prepare 3 possible flooring options and to compute the total cost of the flooring for each option. In each option, different rooms may have different flooring. In your math journal, write a detailed paragraph comparing the pros and cons for each of these 3 flooring options you chose. Consider such things as durability or life expectancy, cost, aesthetics, practicality, etc. Select one of your options and give a written explanation as to why you chose that option.
Note to the teacher: A contractor calculation worksheet is included if you wish to use it with some students. You will need several sheets for each student or group of students.

4 POINTS: The students work cooperatively and independently on the task. They follow directions and make a complete response to all parts of the task. Work is well organized and computations are accurate. All 3 flooring options are unique and explained in detail. The written comparison of the three flooring options is insightful and shows thoughtful analysis. The students select one of their options and give a clear, concise reason for their choice.
3 POINTS: The students are cooperative with each other, but often work as individuals rather than as team members. They need some coaching to follow directions and have some difficulty responding to all parts of the task. The work is fairly well organized, but the written comparison lacks conciseness and clarity. They select one of their options, but the rationale for their choice is vague.
2 POINTS: The students are not uncooperative, but they work more as individuals than as team members. The students need considerable coaching from the teacher. Work is poorly organized and several errors occur in the computations. Three flooring options are explained, but the explanations are not clearly described. The written comparison of the three flooring options is incomplete. The students either fail to select one of the options or they fail to give a rationale for their choice.
1 POINT: The students are uncooperative with each other and show no ability to work as a team. Even with coaching, they do not complete the task. Their work is very poorly organized and many errors occur in their computation. The students show a lack of understanding of the problem. They are unable to find the areas of all the rooms and have difficulty identifying the advantages of one type of flooring over another. Fewer than three flooring options are explained. The written comparison of flooring options is either missing or written without any meaning. The students do not select one of their options.

* In order to find the area of some rooms, they will need to be subdivided into 2 or more parts.
