Gold Seal Lesson:
Exercise Physiology/Scientific Method

Copernicus Education Gateway

Subject:

Science

Grade:

9-12

ICLE Standards:

Science as Inquiry: Apply the scientific method.

Science in Personal and Social Perspectives: Understanding of of personal and community health.

Language Arts: Understand techniques of researching information; use writing to communicate.

Performance Task:

For this task you are to pretend that you are a member of the prestigious Sports Medicine Faculty at a large university center. The university publishes the journal, "Exercise and Sports." The editor of the journal has asked you and some other members of the staff to submit a paper for publication based on experimental research. You are to work together as a team to do the research and prepare the paper for publication

Note to teacher: Groups of four or five students probably work best for this task.

You are free to choose any topic related to sports medicine or exercise physiology that interests you. Some sample topics are: Diet, pulse rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure. Your topic must be approved by the editor/teacher. Your paper must include a summary of the literature and a statement of your research, including a hypothesis, materials used, experimental design, data, results, summary and conclusion(s). Your research should not include body fluid experiments nor animal subjects. Any exercise study must be reasonable and done with healthy subjects. The following criteria will be used for evaluating your research:

  1. proper use of the scientific method:

  2. thoroughness of research;

  3. completeness of experiment;

  4. display of data through graphs, charts, photos, etc.;

  5. neatness and legibility.

Knowledge / Skills:

Know and apply the principles of scientific inquiry.  (s114)

Exhibit good data management skills by collecting, organizing, and graphing data.  (s19)

Apply in writing the rules and conventions of grammar, usage, punctuation, paragraphing and spelling.  (ela1)

Gather information from a variety of sources, including electronic sources, and summarize, analyze, and evaluate its use for a report.  (ela3)

Apply the information gathered from technical texts in real-life situations.  (ela35)

Rubric:

4 Points  =  The team of students independently completes task. They demonstrate good understanding of the scientific method, their research is thorough, the experimental design is of high quality, and their hypothesis is well stated. All aspects of the experiment are of high quality. Data are collected and well displayed. Students are able to reach and concisely state their conclusion(s). The written report is thorough and free of any major grammatical errors.

3 Points  =  The team of students needs some assistance to complete the task. They have a fairly good understanding of what scientific method is, but have some difficulty implementing it. Their experiment design has some minor flaws in it, and their hypothesis is not well stated. They collect good data, but the display is weak. The students are able to reach a conclusion(s), but their writing demonstrates a weakness in communication.

2 Points  =  The team of students needs a lot of assistance to complete the task. Their review of the literature is skimpy, and they have difficulty developing an experiment with meaning. They demonstrate a lack of understanding about the scientific method, their experimental design is very weak, and they have difficulty stating a hypothesis. The data collected are sketchy, making it difficult to reach any meaningful conclusion(s). The students' written work shows poor communication skills. It is poorly structured and contains many grammatical errors.

1 Point  =  The team of students does not complete the task. It is obvious that they have little, if any, understanding of scientific method. Their literature search is meager, they fail to state a hypothesis, and their experiment is poorly structured and meaningless. Data are just about nonexistent, and they do not state conclusions. The written work is sketchy and has no structure. There is no attempt to use good grammar or to write in an acceptable manner
