Gold Seal Lesson:
Enlarging A Picture

Copernicus Education Gateway

Subject:

Mathematics

Grade:

5-8

ICLE Standards:

Number and Number Relationships: Understand and apply ratios and proportions.

Geometry: Explore transformations of geometric figures.

Performance Task:

This task requires you to make an enlargement of a picture.

First, take the picture of your choice and superimpose a grid on the entire frame. Use any grid that you feel will work well for you, such as 1/4 inch-by-1/2 inch.

Make an enlargement of the picture onto a larger grid by reproducing each grid of the picture onto one of the larger grids. Use a scale that will make your enlargement a pretty good sized figure. If the grid size you need is not available, you may need to make your own grid paper. For example if you use a 1:4 scale, you would want to use 1-inch squares if you put a 1/4 inch grid on the original.

Color your enlargement to make it attractive and interesting.

Compare and contrast your enlargement with the original picture.

Knowledge / Skills:

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions.  (m1)

Use the technique of dimensional analysis to convert units of measure (e.g., convert km/hr to m/min).  (m33)

Apply transformation concepts to understand and create congruent and similar figures.  (m49)

Rubric:

3 Points  =  The student is able to complete the task on his/her own. He/she creates a correct proportionate drawing, including grid on picture, appropriate ratio scale and an enlargement of the picture. When comparing and contrasting the picture and its enlargement, the student mentions that the enlargement is similar to the original. He/she knows the figure's dimensions are in the same ratio as the scale used on the grids and the area of the enlargement is equal to the square of the scale ratio. The work is neat and pleasing to the eye.

2 Points  =  The student is able to complete the task, but needs some assistance from others. He/she creates a drawing, but has minor errors or omissions. The student, however, is able to correct the errors when they are pointed out to him/her. He/she knows the enlargement is similar to the original, but is unable to compare their sizes using the scale ratio. The work is a little off and not as neat as it might be. He/she does, however, color it in an attempt to make it pleasing to the eye.

1 Point  =  Even with assistance the student is unable to complete the task. His/her work demonstrates a lack of understanding of the concepts involved in the task. The student's enlargement is crude and not pleasing to the eye. He/she does not compare/contrast the original with the enlargement. The student colors the enlargement, but it is poorly done.

0 Points  =  The student makes no attempt to complete the task and shows no understanding of the concepts needed to perform the task.
