Subject:

Mathematics

Grade:

9-12

ICLE Standards:

Mathematics as Problem Solving: Apply process of mathematical modeling to real-life situations.

Geometry: Represent situations with geometric models in two and three dimensions.

Mathematical Computations: Use appropriate calculating methods to find solution to a problem.

Performance Task:

Your task is to draw a sketch of your dream house, make a scale drawing from your sketch, then construct a scale model of the house. Prior to making your sketch, you should research various plans from builders to ascertain appropriate design and size. After constructing the scale model, you are to research zoning requirements in your area and locate the model on a plot of land, made to scale, which satisfies your local zoning regulations. You are to calculate a reasonable cost to complete the house after construction. Your cost should include, but not be limited to such things as outside siding, paint/wall paper for interior finishing, air conditioning, landscaping, etc. It is not necessary to include the cost of constructing the house. Your final project should include your drawing and model, a justification of your design, and a complete cost analysis including an explanation of your calculations.

Knowledge / Skills:

Gather information from a variety of sources, including electronic sources, and summarize, analyze, and evaluate its use for a report.  (ela3)

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions.  (m1)

Use the technique of dimensional analysis to convert units of measure (e.g., convert km/hr to m/min).  (m33)

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems.  (s115)

Rubric:

4 Points = The student independently completes all parts of the task. He/she follows directions and makes a pleasing sketch of his/her “dream house.” The scale drawing and three dimensional model are accurate, labeled and neatly drawn or made. Student makes an adequate cost analysis with accurate calculations. He/she understands mathematical analysis in the solution to a complex problem.

3 Points = The student needs some assistance to complete all aspects of the task. He/she has difficulty following directions. Some aspects of the project are incomplete or poorly executed. Some minor errors occur in working with the scale, in using the formula and in the calculations needed for the cost analysis. He/she demonstrates only a partial understanding of mathematical analysis in the solution of a complex problem.

2 Points = Even with assistance, the student has difficulty completing aspects of the task. Many errors occur in his/ her work. The student shows little understanding of scale as it relates to making drawings and models and does not have a working knowledge of geometric formula. The student’s calculations contain major errors. The student shows a lack of understanding of mathematical analysis as related to problem solving.

1 Point = The student does not complete the task. He/she shows little understanding of the concepts and skills necessary. The student does not make a model, his/her cost analysis is meaningless and what little computation is included contains many serious errors. He/she lacks understanding of geometric concepts and shows no comprehension of mathematical analysis.
