Subject:

Science

Grade:

9-12

ICLE Standards:

Science as Inquiry - Develop the abilities of scientific inquiry.

Life Science - Develop an understanding of the cell.

Performance Task:

This task requires you to design an experiment and to use it in a scientific inquiry.

Design and implement an experiment to determine the optimal time and conditions for preparing squash preparations of onion root cells for observing the various stages of mitosis.

Collect and organize data in the form of drawings, charts, and graphs for analysis and interpretation.

Formulate at least three conclusions.

Write a brief report of your experiment, indicating what you learned from the inquiry and stating the conclusions that you were able to formulate.

Knowledge / Skills:

Know and apply the principles of scientific inquiry.  (s114)

Exhibit good data management skills by collecting, organizing, and graphing data.  (s19)

Use writing as a tool for learning in formats such as learning logs, laboratory reports, note-taking, and journals.  (ela40)

Rubric:

4 Points  =  The student shows an understanding of how to design a scientific study. He/she demonstrates ability to collect, organize, and analyze data to formulate conclusions. The student makes at least three conclusions as a result of the inquiry.

3 Points  =  The student needs some coaching to design an effective scientific study. He/she has some minor difficulty collecting, organizing, and analyzing the data to formulate conclusions. The student is able to make only one or two meaningful conclusions as a result of the inquiry.

2 Points  =  The student demonstrates little understanding of designing a scientific study. Data are incomplete and poorly organized. The data analysis does not result in any meaningful conclusions.

1 Point  =  The student is unable to complete the task. He/she demonstrates no understanding of designing a scientific study. The student is unable to make any conclusions.
