Kim works for a major manufacturer of composite
materials which have had a tremendous impact on our lives for a very long time. Examples of composites include such familiar products
as concrete and fiberglass. The value of these composites is a function of their properties and their
applications. Kim's job responsibility is to recruit new researchers for the company who will create new products. You
have applied for a job with the company and Kim has asked you to design a new composite material as part of
your application.
You may use any common materials such as white glue, cement, plaster of paris,
thread, fabric, etc. Kim wants to see your "recipe" for the composite, but also wants to see what your
thinking was prior to making the composite. Therefore, Kim asks that you propose several slightly different recipes for
the material prior to the actual making of the product and asks that you also predict what the
characteristics of this new composite will be. Your product must also be tested for strength, shear, and compressions.
Careful collection and analysis of data should take place, and appropriate graphs should be developed (e.g.,
weight to strength). After making and testing your new product, you should propose appropriate applications
for this product. Include a written report that summarizes the test results and that proposes and defends the
use of this new product.
