Subject:

ICLE Standards:

Mathematics:   Use tools of measurement (ruler, compass and protractor) and knowledge of geometric constructions to create isosceles and equilateral triangles.

Language Arts:  Write to inform.

Performance Task:

Our class has been asked to contribute an exhibit for the display case in the main hallway. We are to display an academic project and to discuss in writing how we worked on the project and what we learned.

Using three different colors of construction paper we will create a quilt piece using isosceles and equilateral triangles.

Please follow these directions:

  1. Construct and very carefully cut out isosceles triangles having a 4-inch base and 30 degree base angles. Repeat this for a total of 12 isosceles triangles - 6 in one color and 6 in another color.

  2. Using the third color, construct and very carefully cut out 12 equilateral triangles with sides congruent to the legs of the isosceles triangles.

  3. Form a quadrilateral by taping together the bases of two isosceles triangles of different color. Repeat this process for each pair of isosceles triangles. Accuracy in taping is important. (Check for "daylight" between the pieces.)

  4. Tape the 6 quadrilaterals together to form a six pointed star. (Do this by joining the legs of the isosceles triangles. Also alternate colors.)

  5. Form 6 more quadrilaterals by taping two equilateral triangles together at a time. Again, accuracy in taping is important.

  6. Tape the quadrilaterals from step #5 onto the six-pointed star. The resultant figure should be a regular hexagon.

  7. Six-pointed stars will be joined into a class quilt to be displayed in the main display case. Several journal entries will be typed up neatly and displayed along with the quilt.

  8. When completed with steps 1 - 6, please summarize in your journal, what you did to successfully complete this activity. Please note any short cuts, or difficulties you encountered. Evaluate the amount of success you had with this activity. What mathematical terms or concepts did you learn?

Knowledge / Skills:

Understand the properties and classification triangles by sides (i.e., scalene, isosceles, and equilateral). M.16

Use the technique of dimensional analysis to convert units of measure (e.g., convert km/hr to m/min). Understand and use various techniques for estimating, making and converting measure; and using these to perform dimensional analysis. M.33

Follow written directions carefully and accurately. ELA.6

Use writing as a tool for learning in formats such as learning logs, laboratory reports, note-taking, journals and portfolios. ELA.40

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems. 115

Rubric:

4 POINTS: Triangles are accurately constructed, and cut out neatly. Three colors are used within the quilt piece. Journal entry complete and shows understanding of constructions and vocabulary.

3 POINTS: Triangles are accurately constructed, but are not cut out neatly. Three colors are used within the quilt piece. Journal entry partially completed-shows some understanding of constructions and vocabulary.

2 POINTS: Triangles are not accurately constructed and are not cut out neatly. Three colors are used within the quilt piece. Journal entry partially completed and shows little understanding of constructions and vocabulary.

1 POINT: Triangles are not accurately constructed. Quilt piece is not completed. No journal entry is recorded.
