ICLE Standards:

Life Science: Develop an understanding of the cell.

Performance Task:

A small city, village, or town contains many things, each of which serves a particular purpose. For example, the city hall is the site of the government, the sanitation department overseas the collection and disposal of waste materials, and the businesses contribute to the general economic environment of the city. List as many things as you can that make up a good operating city. Research all of the functions that each of these has and state how each contributes to the overall operation of the city. You may want to visit or call various people in the city to obtain this information, or you may use printed materials and/or the computer to obtain this information. Choose two things in the city and pretend that they have become nonfunctional. Describe in writing what might happen to the city over a period of time if these things remain nonfunctional.

Now investigate the parts of a cell. You can find these in your textbook or another book in the media center. Make a list of all the cell parts that you find and state the function of each part.

Compare the parts of the cell to the parts of a city. Make a list of all the parts of the city and the cell that have similar jobs or functions. You should be able to identify about eight parts of the cell that have similarities to the parts of the city. Choose two parts of the cell and pretend that they have become nonfunctional. Describe in writing what might happen to your cell over a period of time if these parts remain nonfunctional.

Knowledge / Skills:

Identify the cell as a common unit between living things; understand cell structure and the functions they perform.  (s9)

Gather information from a variety of sources, including electronic sources, and summarize, analyze, and evaluate its use for a report.  (ela3)

Understand and use a variety of organizational formats such as compare/contrast, cause/effect, inductive/deductive, most important to least important, and least important to most important.  (ela50)

Rubric:

4 POINTS:  The student independently completes the task and demonstrates that he/she knows how both a city and a cell function. The student can see similarities in functions between parts of the city and parts of the cell. He/she can predict what will happen to the city and the cell if some of the parts become nonfunctional. The student's written descriptions are clear and demonstrate good English usage.

3 POINTS:  The student needs some assistance to complete the task. The student demonstrates that he/she knows how both a city and a cell function. He/she has some difficulty in seeing the similarities in functions between parts of the city and parts of the cell. The student has difficulty predicting what will happen if some of the parts become nonfunctional. The student's written descriptions are not totally clear and contain some grammatical errors.

2 POINTS:  The student needs constant assistance to complete the task. He/she demonstrates only partial understanding of how cities and cells function. The student has difficulty seeing how parts of the city function in a similar manner to parts of the cell. He/she does not clearly predict what will happen if some of the parts of the city and cell become nonfunctional. The student's written descriptions are vague and contain many grammatical errors.

1 POINT:  The student does not complete the task. He/she shows little understanding of how a city and a cell function. The student makes no comparison of parts of the city with parts of the cell. He/she makes no viable prediction of what will happen if parts of the city and cell become nonfunctional. The student's written descriptions, if any, are meaningless and state nothing of value.
