Subject:

Mathematics

Grade:

5-8

ICLE Standards:

Communication: Use numbers, words, and graphics to represent theoretical and practical situations.

Statistics: Construct, read, and interpret tables, charts, and graphs.

Performance Task:

Select from the newspaper three companies listed on the stock exchange. Note the opening price for each stock.

Pretend that you have $5,000 to invest. Purchase shares of each stock so that the total cost does not exceed $5,000.

Make a chart showing your purchase and the performance of your stock on a daily basis for the next five days.

On a single set of axes, construct a graph of the data in your chart. Suppose that you sell all your stock at the closing price on the fifth day. Compute your net profit or loss for the five day period.

Write one or two paragraphs discussing your outcome. Describe which stocks were your best and worst performers.

Knowledge / Skills:

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions.  (m1)

Understand the best procedures for statistical data collection, organization, and display.  (m5)

Use the technique of dimensional analysis to convert units of measure (e.g., convert km/hr to m/min).  (m33)

Use expository writing skills in subjects other than English language arts.  (ela58)

Rubric:

4 Points  =  All data are depicted and organized correctly and neatly. Written, mental, and calculator computations are performed accurately. The student demonstrates an understanding of the problem and is able to carry through the processes needed to arrive at a conclusion. The student clearly states and defends his/ her findings.

3 Points  =  All data are organized correctly, but graphs and charts are not very well constructed. Most written, mental, and calculator computations are correct. The student demonstrates only a partial understanding of the problem and needs some assistance to carry out the processes needed to arrive at a conclusion. The statement and defense of the findings is somewhat vague.

2 Points  =  Data are not well organized, and the charts/graphs are poorly constructed. The students makes several computational errors. He/she shows little understanding of the relationship between decimals and fractions. The student demonstrates little understanding of the problem and does not carry out the processes needed to complete the activity. The statement and defense of the findings are unclear.

1 Point  =  Data are poorly organized and depicted. Several errors occur in the student's computations. Very little work is completed and/or correct. The student demonstrates little, if any, understanding of the processes needed to perform the activity. No statement or defense of findings is given.
