Subject:

Mathematics

Grade:

5-8

ICLE Standards:

Measurement: Use estimation in measuring.

Numbers:  Understand and apply ratio and proportion.

Writing:  Write to inform.

Interpersonal: Work with others.

Performance Task:

For this task, you will be working in groups of three or four. Your job will be to make a given part of a giant.

Each group will be given the size of the giant's hand and an assigned body part. You will need to determine the correct size of the assigned body part that would fit proportionately to the giant. You may not talk with the other groups. We will then assemble the giant.

Once this is completed, each person will write a letter to a classmate who was not present for this activity explaining the activity and how your group came up with the measurements. Be sure to tell how the giant looked assembled and what you would do to improve the body part your group worked on if you had it to do over again.

Knowledge / Skills:

Use the technique of dimensional analysis to convert units of measure (e.g., convert km/hr to m/min).  Understand and use various techniques for estimating, making and converting measure; and using these to perform dimensional analysis.  M.33

Apply in writing the rules and conventions of grammar, usage, punctuation, paragraphing and spelling.  ELA.1

Present information in well-organized fashion that will be clear to the target audience.  ELA.11

Participate, sometimes leading, in group meetings by contributing, taking turns speaking, and working toward a common goal.  ELA.20

Rubric:

4 POINTS =The student contributes to the group and completes the task. The student demonstrates a working understanding of proportion, ratio and estimation.  The letter conveys information clearly and completely with no errors.

3 POINTS =  The student needed some assistance to complete the task. Although the body part is relatively correctly sized, some minor errors in proportion are evident. Some minor errors in the letter, but the letter is clear and complete.

2 POINTS =  The student needed considerable assistance in completing the task. Needed help in contributing to the giant.  Shows a lack of understanding of what the group accomplished and did not write a clear and complete letter.

1  POINTThe student did not complete work within the group. There is no organization or understanding of proportion ratio and measuring demonstrated through the project or the letter.
