ICLE Standards:
|
|
|
Life Science: Demonstrate an understanding of
the characteristics of organisms.
Science and Technology: Develop the abilities of
technological design.
Communication: Demonstrate the ability to
communicate science understandings orally or in writing.
Measurement: Make and use measurements in
realistic settings.

Performance Task:
|
|
|
Note to the teacher: You will want to have the
students perform this task after or during their study of insects.
Your task is to make a model of an insect which interests you.
In your
science journal, state the definition of an insect and identify the insect for which you will construct a model.
Before making your model, draw a picture of the insect in your journal and label all of its body
parts. Identify the scale that you plan to use to make your model.
Construct your model, using any materials from
the "materials table" or you may bring other materials from home. Be sure to measure accurately as you
make the model of your
insect.
In your journal, describe your insect and write a story about your
insect. Your story may tell about the insect or may be a story you make up having the insect as the
main character. If you wish, you may read your story aloud to the class.

Knowledge / Skills:
|
|
|
Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and
constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to
practical problems. (s115)
Know the characteristics, roles, and divisions
of complex organisms. (s30)
Use writing as a tool for learning in formats
such as learning logs, laboratory reports, note-taking, and journals. (ela40)

4 Points =
The student demonstrates knowledge of what an insect is and is able
to identify all of the main body parts. The student's model of the insect
shows main body parts, is constructed to scale, has symmetry, and is neatly and accurately made using proper measurement tools.
The student's story is well composed, using correct standard English. The oral presentation, if
made, is well developed and presented in a fluent manner.
3 Points = The student demonstrates knowledge of
what an insect is and knows all of the main body parts. The model is fairly
neatly made and shows main body parts, but they are not in good proportion.
The model does not demonstrate an understanding of symmetry. The student
demonstrates adequate ability to select and use appropriate measurement tools. The student's
story is fairly well composed, using correct standard English. The oral presentation, if made, is
adequately developed, but the presentation is somewhat dull.
2 Points = The students demonstrates knowledge of
what an insect is, but does not identify all of the body parts. The model
is poorly constructed. It is not drawn to proportion and lacks symmetry.
The student does not demonstrate an adequate ability to select and use
appropriate measurement tools. The written story shows little effort or creativity. The oral presentation,
if made, is poorly developed and boring.
1 Point = The student demonstrates little, if any, knowledge about
insects. The model, if attempted, is poorly constructed with no attention
to accuracy or detail. The entire task shows little effort or creativity. There either is no story or it is so poorly written that it is meaningless.
