Performance Task:

You are to work with one other student on this task. Pretend that you are manufacturers of Blueberry Muffin Mix. As a manufacturer and citizen, you are interested in both profit and protection of the environment. You are considering marketing your muffin mix in small and large packages. The dimensions of the boxes and number of muffins per box are given below.

How much more or less material does it take to make three small boxes of Blueberry Muffin Mix to equal one large box? Show how you arrived at your answer. What impact, if any, do you think the sale of different sized boxes would have on the amount of solid waste produced? Explain your thinking.

You and your partner have done a survey to determine potential sales. You have arrived at the following conclusions:

  1. If only the large box is available, you will sell 250,000 boxes per month.
  2. If only the small box is available, you will sell 550,000 boxes per month.
  3. If both sized boxes are available, you will sell 150,000 large boxes and 250,000 small boxes each month.

If you want to produce the least amount of solid waste material, which of the three options above would you choose?

You anticipate that the large boxes will make you a net profit of $ 0.38 per box, and the small boxes will make you a net profit of $ 0.15 per box. If you wish to maximize your profit, which option would you choose.

As a manufacturer, you are, of course, interested in maximizing your profit. As a citizen, you are, however, also interested in minimizing the solid waste material that your company is producing. Considering both of these factors, which option would you choose to manufacturer? Explain your choice.

Knowledge / Skills:

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions.  (m1)

Understand the use of variables in expressions such as 4x, x+2, and 2x-1, solve for the variable, and know how to represent expressions such as "twice the number" or "four more than the number" using variables. (m7)

Compute the perimeter and area of two-dimensional figures. (m13)

Know the classification and properties of solid figures such as prisms, rectangular solids, pyramids, right circular cylinders, cones, and spheres. (m29)

Use the technique of dimensional analysis to convert units of measure (e.g., convert km/hr to m/min). (m33)
