Performance Task:

You are a member of an educational design team employed by a toy company. Your task is to design and construct a board game that will challenge and assist students in their study of biomes. The game you create will take the players through the eight different biomes where they must encounter each of the following key ideas:

  • characteristic plants and animals
  • climate conditions
  • unique features
  • interrelationship among organisms
  • causes of environmental destruction, either natural or human

The design of the game must require participants to utilize factual knowledge as well as make judgments concerning environmental issues unique to each biome.
Your team will research, organize and prioritize the data; design the rules of the game; and construct the actual game.

Notes to the teacher: For this activity, the class should be divided into teams of four students each. If your students decide to use "fact" type cards, you may wish to require them to produce an answer booklet. "Situation" type cards may be left open ended with players judging appropriate responses.
