Subject:

Science

Grade:

9-12

ICLE Standards:

  • Information:  Acquire and use information
  • Science:  Design research projects
  • Technology:  Work with a variety of technologies
  • Statistics:  Collect and organize data
  • Communications:  Make an oral presentation

Performance Task:

The class will research and generate a survey to give to 100 students on wellness issues to find areas of concern.  Then working in cooperative groups, the class will research a selected factor, design a sound experimental method to assess that factor and implement the experiment with other members of their class.  Findings will be communicated in a 5-7 minute presentation.  Appropriate technology should be used in all phase of the task.

Knowledge / Skills:

Know and apply the principles of scientific inquiry.  (Implicit in this statement are the processes of prediction, estimation, developing hypotheses, drawing conclusions, evaluation, and following ethical principles and professional procedures.)  S.114

Understand the best procedures for statistical data collection, organization, and display.  M.5

Gather information from a variety of sources, including electronic sources, and summarize, analyze, and evaluate its use for a report.  ELA.3

Prepare and deliver individual speeches by gathering information, rehearsing, making eye contact, speaking loudly enough, delivering information in a well-organized fashion, and appealing to the needs of the target audience.  ELA.10

Rubric:

Phase 1: Developing awareness through a survey

  • 2 =  Each group made a survey, asked their share of students without repeats, and compiled data accurately.

  • 1 =  Needed coaching to complete task.

  • 0 =  Did not complete assignment.

Phase 2: Designed an experiment

  • 2 =  Experiment measured their factor choice. Performed experiments with students and had accurate data.

  • 1 =  Flaws in experimental design. Sloppy data.

  • 0 =  Did not complete assignment.

Phase 3: Presentation

  • 2 =  Between 5-7 minutes time. Had visual. Expressed clearly their experiment and results.

  • 1 =  Missing one or more of above.
