ICLE Standards:

Measurement: Extend and apply understanding of area and perimeter to everyday situations.

Computation: Compute with whole numbers, decimals, or fractions.

Mathematics as Problem Solving: Acquire confidence in using mathematics meaningfully.

Mathematics as Communication: Reflect upon and clarify thinking about mathematical ideas and relationships.

Performance Task:

You have been invited to one of your friends for a birthday party. Select an imaginary present for you to give to your friend and choose a box in which to wrap your gift. Take measurements that you will need to compute the total area of the paper needed to wrap the package. A good wrapper allows for overlap of the side and ends of the box. You also plan to put ribbon on the package.

Make a diagram of your package, showing how you will place the ribbon on it. Then compute the amount of ribbon that you will need. Allow enough ribbon for tying. Record all measurements taken and show all necessary calculations and formulas used.

Purchase paper and ribbon and wrap your present.

Write a discussion of how you approached this task, different ideas that you tried, and problems you may have had.

Turn in your written response, calculations, and your wrapped package.

Note to the teacher: You may bring in enough boxes and let the students select a box or you may have them bring one from home. Students may bring in old paper and ribbon from home rather than buying it

Knowledge / Skills:

Perform operations with signed (positive and negative) numbers, including decimals, ratios, percents, and fractions.  M.1

Compute the perimeter and area of two-dimensional figures.  M.13

Use the technique of dimensional analysis to convert units of measure (e.g., convert km/hr to m/min).  Understand and use various techniques for estimating, making and converting measure; and using these to perform dimensional analysis.  M.33

Use expository writing skills in subjects other than English language arts.  ELA.58

Rubric:

3 POINTS =  The student is able to complete the task with little or no direction from the teacher. Area/perimeter measurements and calculations are accurate. Work and necessary formulas are shown. Pictorial model is neat and precise. The student demonstrates an understanding of, and the difference between, area and perimeter. Discussion of task is complete and well written.

2 POINTS =  The student needs a little assistance from the teacher to complete the task. Some minor errors occur in the area/perimeter measurements and calculations, resulting in inaccurate answers. Most of the work and necessary formulas are shown. Pictorial model is made, but is not very neat or accurate. The student demonstrates only a partial understanding of, and the difference between, area and perimeter. Discussion of task is brief and is not written smoothly.

1  POINT =  The student needs constant assistance from the teacher to complete the task. Several errors occur in the area/perimeter measurements and calculations, resulting in mostly inaccurate answers. Little of the work and necessary formulas are shown. Pictorial model is either missing or poorly drawn. The student demonstrates little or no understanding of, or the difference between, area and perimeter. Discussion of task is missing or vague and poorly constructed.
