Science

Grade:

9-12

ICLE Standards:

Scientific Connection: Make connections by identifying common characteristics of objects to form a classification structure; apply knowledge of science to a new situation.

Science as Communication: Present scientific ideas orally and in writing.

Physical Science: Develop an understanding of the chemical and physical properties of materials.

Performance Task:

The periodic table is the arrangement of chemical elements according to their atomic numbers. In this task, you are to use your knowledge of the organization of the periodic table to develop a classification scheme for a consumer product. Select any consumer product available in several different brands and develop a scheme to classify the various brands. Create your own classification scheme based upon the physical and chemical properties of your product. Develop a hard copy of your classification scheme using a chart, table, poster, etc. and make an oral presentation to your classmates.

Explain what criteria and rationale you used to arrange the various brands of your selected product.

Knowledge / Skills:

Make observations of the local environment using senses and instruments. Inferences and interpretations are arrived at based on observations. Classify observable properties and organize observations in a meaningful and logical way.  (s5)

Understand the historical development of the periodic table and that the atomic number is the basis of the arrangement of the periodic table.  (s78)

Present information in well-organized fashion that will be clear to the target audience.  (ela11)

Understand and use graphs, charts, and visuals to enhance informational writing.  (ela29)

Rubric:

5 Points  =  The student completes the task independently. He/she identifies and compares the physical and chemical properties of the various brands of the chosen product. The student develops a classification scheme for the chosen product and classifies the various brands using this scheme. He/she develops a hard copy of the results, demonstrating an understanding of classification systems. The student's oral presentation to the class is precise, clear, and fluently delivered.

4 Points  =  The student needs minimal assistance to complete the task. He/she identifies and compares most of the physical and chemical properties of the various brands of the chosen product. The student has some difficulty developing a classification scheme for the chosen product, but develops a hard copy of this scheme. The student demonstrates a fairly good understanding of classification systems. The oral presentation is fairly precise, but the student has some difficulty with delivery.

3 Points  =  The student needs considerable assistance to complete the task. He/she identifies and compares only a few of the physical and chemical properties of the various brands of the chosen product. The student makes a limited classification scheme based on a few of the physical and/or chemical properties and demonstrates a limited understanding of classification systems. The student's oral presentation lacks clarity, is not well organized, and is not very interesting.

2 Points  =  The student needs constant assistance to complete the task. He/she identifies and compares only one or two of the physical and chemical properties of the various brands of the chosen product. The student, therefore, is unable to make a meaningful classification scheme based on the properties of the project and demonstrates little understanding of classification systems. The student's oral presentation is vague, poorly organized, and poorly presented.

1 Point  =  Even with assistance, the student is unable to complete the task. He/she is unable to identify physical and chemical properties of the various brands of the chosen product. The student is unable to produce and present a hard copy of the classification scheme and displays no understanding of developing a classification system. The student's oral presentation to the class, if made, is meaningless.

0 Points  =  No attempt is made to complete the task.
