Subject:

Science

Grade:

5-8

ICLE Standards:

Life Science: Develop an understanding of structures and functions in living systems.

Communication: Express scientific ideas in writing.

Performance Task:

Pretend you are a mad scientist on Neptune.  You are about to apply your knowledge of human body systems to build an alien being and then write a scientific paper to report your work to the scientific community.  Your alien must include the following body systems with the indicated components.  The systems in your alien, however, are not limited to those components.

  • circulatory system: heart, veins, and arteries

  • skeletal system: bones and joints

  • muscular system: muscles and tendons

  • respiratory system: nose, lungs, trachea

  • digestive system: mouth, esophagus, liver, stomach, small and large intestines

  • central nervous system: brain, nerves, spinal cord

Be creative!  Give your alien a name if you wish.

In your model (pictorial, computer-generated, or three dimensional), the major parts of each system must be visible.  Your written scientific report must explain how they function.  Include how the different functions are related to each other and how they depend upon each other.

Knowledge / Skills:

Plan and apply real or hypothetical models and constructions to facilitate investigation and learning and the solution to practical problems.  (xs2)

Identify and understand the structure and parts that comprise the systems (i.e., cardiovascular, nervous, lymphatic, muscular, etc.) and regions (i.e., head and neck, upper limb, thorax, abdominal pelvic, back, and lower limb) of the human body.  (s2)

Use expository writing skills in subjects other than English language arts.  (ela58)
