Subject:

Science

Grade:

ICLE Standards:

Science: Complete a scientific investigation based on the application of scientific inquiry; develop an understanding of how changes in environmental conditions can affect the survival of individual organisms and entire species.

Mathematical Connections: Apply mathematical thinking and modeling to solve problems that arise in other disciplines.

Statistics and Probability: Systematically collect, organize and display data; construct, read and interpret displays of data

Performance Task:

Scientists often use the process of scientific inquiry to investigate cause and effect relationships. In recent years, our environment has been the focus of such investigations. Environmentalists have cited acid rain as a major problem in today's world. It has had a devastating effect on plant growth in many regions of our country. Your task is to design an experiment using radish seedlings, "acid" water and tap water to determine the effect of acid rain on radish seedlings. You will be given supplies for growing and for measuring the growth of your radish plants. Include in your experiment a schedule to observe and record your data on a regular basis. Using graphs and/or statistical measures, draw conclusions from your results.

Include any inferences that you can make regarding the effects of acid rain on our environment. Write a formal laboratory report to detail your procedures and present your findings.
